HAWAIIAN ISLANDS. MOLOKAI – HEAVENLY ISLAND
Among the Hawaiian Islands, there is a small island, which is popularly called ‘Friendly’.  This is Molokai – heavenly island. Beauty and fantastic nature prevail here. This island doesn’t have anything which modern city person is used to. It is truly a heavenly place where untouched beaches, clean air and sun are everywhere. Here you will never find high-rise buildings, heavy traffic and moreover traffic lights. The height of Molokai’s buildings is no more than the height of growing palms and the roads remind of rural highways. Forget about supermarkets, cinemas and restaurants for a while. Hotels tourists settle in ideally fit in rural landscape.

Each part of this island is unique and beautiful in its own way. The world’s highest cliffs rise above the north coast of the island and 40 km reef stretches along the south coast. None of the Hawaiian Islands have such big beach with clean and white sand as the beach Papohaku which stretched for almost 5 km along the western coast of Molokai. Waterfalls which height is almost 600 meters are wonderfully beautiful and fall just into the sea. The rain forests of the island have such flora and fauna which you can find in no other place.

Molokai is an amazing island with its original history and sights. There is a Catholic church on the territory of Kalaupapa National Historical Park. It was built by Father Damien, who in 1995 was consecrated a saint by Christian church. The other church was built by Belgian priest who dedicated his whole life to serve for lepers who were settled in a colony in 1865. Hawaiian authorities chose this island because Kalaupapa (now it is national historical park) is waterlocked from three sides and surrounded by cliffs from land. More than 8000 lepers were brought here and left to the mercy of fate. In 1873 Father Damien came to hospital for lepers. He did his best to create suitable living conditions for the patients. Nowadays, ex-patients live in the colony. New patients aren’t brought here. Tourists are interested in the life of lepers. Not to disturb the inhabitants, tourists can get to the colony only accompanied by a guide. You can get there by plane or walking in the mountains.

Halawa Valley is resting place for a lot of tourists. Rocks as if decorations dissected island’s coast with ravines. It is very quiet and beautiful here. Two fantastic waterfalls go down into the valley. There is a legend that a large lizard lives here. It doesn’t frighten tourists. They have good time here swimming, fishing and doing surfing.

Only here in the north part of the island you can find the famous ‘phallic rock’, where women who suffer from sterility come with hope. Above all this, Molokai island is motherland of Hula dance.
